Fashion Friday: The Jumpsuit

One of the easiest transitional pieces to take you from one season to the next is the jumpsuit. Yes, a jumpsuit can be the worst in a bathroom situation, but the positives outweigh that one inconvenience. One of my favorites so far this season is this MINKPINK polka dot jumpsuit from REVOLVE Clothing. See the different ways I style it on Monday, but until then shop some of these one piece wonders below and get ready for Spring. How To Wear It: The New Lace

Last week's Fashion Friday featured one of spring's biggest trends, lace. Lace today isn't like the dainty lace I remember as a kid. The lace coming down the runways of Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang and many more is anything but sweet. While Victorian goth isn't for everyone, there are ways to incorporate it into your everyday wardrobe. Try one of this season's lace blouses to dip your toe into a semi-frilly pond. For today's How To Wear It, I styled a TopShop lace tank and ASOS Victoriana blouse. Both blouses are under $50 and can easily transition from day to night. Swap out shoes and bags but the rest is interchangeable.[show_ms_widget id="32923992" image_id="37302203" width="575" height="485"]

Fashion Friday: The New Lace

Even when I was young, frills and lace were never my thing. I think it stems from the constant fear of not wanting to look like one of my Grandma's doilies. Lace back then was always super girly and that just wasn't my style when I was a little girl.

Fast forward to today's Victorian goth revival and suddenly lace doesn't have to always be so sweet. Powerful lace dresses have been all over the Fashion Week Fall 2016 Runways.

Two of my favorite dresses from last week's Oscars were lace. Honestly, no one wears this Victorian trend better than Rooney Mara.

How To Wear It: Free People Gladiator Sandals

Friday's Fashion Friday featured a bevy of Free People gladiator sandals. There are a lot of gladiator variations out there, but Free People continually carries the best crop of sandals from short to tall. Don't be discouraged by this trend. You will try on A LOT of gladiator sandals before you find the right pair. If you're shorter or not sure you want to fully commit to a tall pair, go with one of the shorter styles. My favorite Free People pair hit just above the ankle and they will work with literally everything. When it comes to color, gladiators in dark brown or black can be harsh if you're fair. I have longer legs and I'm pretty pale. Black or dark brown gladiators that hit above my ankle aren't very flattering. I try to go with lighter brown or light colored version that are either tall to my knee or hit right at my ankle. No one wants to purposely make their leg look like a tree trunk, so try on as many as you can until you find just the right pair.

Channel your inner boho and pair your gladiators with a long patterned maxi dress, or your favorite pair of denim shorts and a tank top or tee. Since my style tends to be boho-light, I've styled a short pair and a tall pair of gladiators the way I would wear them...a smidge boho mixed with a little J-Crew prep.

Shop the post and let me know when you find your perfect pair! [show_ms_widget id="32659111" image_id="36881547" width="575" height="519"] [show_ms_widget id="32659207" image_id="36881668" width="575" height="467"]

Fashion Friday: Gladiator Sandals

We may still be trudging through the rain and snow in our boots, but that doesn't mean we can't start dreaming of our summer sandals. Gladiators are big again and Free People's gladiator game is strong. Come back for Monday's How To Wear It to see how I style a few versions of these must-have sandals.[show_ms_widget id="32454340" image_id="36577319" width="575" height="498"] Shop more gladiator sandals here:

Nashville Fashion Week Announces the 2015 Nashville Fashion Forward Fund Award Recipient

Originally published for 12th & Broad... It’s easy to think of Nashville Fashion Week as just one week of pretty clothes and pretty people walking down a runway each spring. While that does happen, Nashville Fashion Week is actually much more than that. A small group gathered at the delicious Little Octopus last week, after Nashville’s first snow/ice blast, to celebrate the main reason why Nashville Fashion Week exists.

Nashville Fashion Forward Fund_Photo by Stella Shops

The Nashville Fashion Forward Fund was established in 2011 by the co-founders of Nashville Fashion Week to help advance the career of a local talent with experience in a fashion-related field. Award recipients are selected based on pre-established criteria inspired by the Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA)/VOGUE Fashion Fund. A Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee Board committee reviews applicants, who all have ties to Middle Tennessee, each year and then announces the award recipient in January.

Previous award recipients have gone on to do incredible things in the fashion industry. Designer Juliana Bass was the first Nashville Fashion Forward Fund (NFFF) Award recipient. She used her award to fund a trip to a major trade show in Berlin, where she now resides, to better understand the international fashion market. She is now regularly showing collections at New York Fashion Week. 2012 recipient, Lauren Leonard of Leona was able to travel to Paris to meet with fabric and trend vendors to gather inspiration for what turned out to be a gorgeous Spring 2015 collection. Stylist and Pennyweight blogger, Elise Joseph was the 2013 recipient. Elise has an incredible eye and has worked with a number of fashion and lifestyle brands like Madewell and West Elm. She hopes to eventually open her own brick and mortar shop. She’s using her award for domestic and international travel to meet with artists and designers from around the world. If her Pennyweight Pop-Up, held at Wilder last year, is any indication of what’s to come, Nashville can’t get her shop soon enough. Ceri Hoover, the designer behind Ceri Hoover handbags was the 2014 recipient. Ceri used her award to travel to Milan, Italy to source leather to expand her line to include shoe design and production, which we’ll get to see with her Spring/Summer 2016 collection.

Last week, Eric Bornhop of Eric Adler Clothing was named the 2015 NFFF Award Recipient. Eric is churning out incredible menswear and debuted at Nashville Fashion Week in 2014 as part of that year’s Emerging Designers. While living in Spain in 2012, Eric was inspired by street culture to create his own clothing line. When he returned to Nashville, he worked as an apprentice under local legend and fashion designer Manuel Cuevas. Manuel taught Eric the art of tailoring and that attention to detail shines through in each piece of Eric Adler clothing. Bornhop now has his own Green Hills studio where he designs and tailors for Alan Jackson, Big Kenny, Shania Twain and more.

Eric Bornhop_NFFF 2015 Award Recipient

“Eric Adler Clothing wouldn’t be where it is today without Nashville Fashion Week,” said Bornhop. “Nashville Fashion Week has provided me with a network of peers and resources, expansive exposure and marketing opportunities and the ability to organically plant my roots in my home city of Nashville. In a rapidly emerging fashion community, Nashville Fashion Week has provided a springboard for an emerging designer like myself to get their foot in the door, one of the hardest feats to overcome in fashion.”

Bornhop’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, which showed at Nashville Fashion Week last year, was sharp and stylish. In our skinny jeans and beanie hat world of menswear, seeing Bornhop’s collection of well-dressed men walk the runway was a breath of fresh air. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

How To Wear It: Bomber Jackets

This week's Fashion Friday featured one of this season's most popular jacket styles, the bomber jacket. These jackets are super versatile since they come in a variety of fabrics from satin to sequin, twill to leather, there is a bomber jacket for any occasion. Pair one with your favorite graphic tee, skinnies and boots or try pairing with a jumpsuit or dress like I did here with this Nasty Gal black jersey dress that has the best cutouts. Nashville Humane Unleashed

Originally published on 12th & Broad... The Hutton Hotel was full of furry guests as Nashville Humane Association’s Unleashed took over the Grand Ballroom of the hotel for the sixth year. Unleashed is one of my favorite annual events and not only because I get to bring one of my pugs to dinner. It’s because this event raises much-needed funds for Nashville Humane. The event is a blast and it’s fantastic to watch the community come together, dogs in tow, to support animals in need.

Me and Mingus at Unleashed

Nashville Humane had a record year in 2015. They placed over 4,000 dogs and cats into their forever homes. As one of Nashville Humane’s largest fundraisers of the year, Unleashed helps NHA raise money not only through tickets to the event but also through an incredible array of silent and live auction items donated from Nashville businesses.

My pug Mingus took his official 12th & Broad pugarazzi Twitter and Instagram duties very seriously. At 10 years old, he’s a demanding pup so he had no problem telling me who he wanted photos of, and who he didn’t. He still hasn’t gotten over the “Derp” incident with Wells Adams from iHeartRadio who was one of the celebrity dog walkers. Mingus is now a big fan of country artist Kelleigh Bannen who told us in the green room that she has two pugs of her own.

Mingus with Nashville Humane's Rover and Fluffy

The highlight of the evening (paws down) was the runway show that featured adoptable pups walking the catwalk with celebrity handlers while wearing custom couture apparel made by Nashville designers. This year, Nashville Fashion Forward Fund Award Recipient Eric Adler created an adorable red and white button down with a black and tan floral printed collar. Another favorite was the punk rock look created by Any Old Iron. Sisters of Nature, Ola Mai, Olia Zavozina, The Trunk, Van Hoang, Riley Reed, Truly Alvarenga and Baxter Bailey & Company all created one-of-a-kind looks that were later auctioned off. I can tell you from first-hand experience that bidding on these outfits is a big part of the evening. My pug Lula loves the cold weather, because she gets to wear her couture Elizabeth Suzann cashmere coat that I purchased at the Unleashed auction two years ago.

I had to pry Mingus away from the celebrity goody bags provided by Title Boxing. That bag was packed full of amazing goodies like Goo Goo Clusters, Southern Firefly candles, Kendra Scott jewelry, Kevin Mitchell hair product and Mingus’ favorites Yazoo and Tito’s Vodka. He was also a big fan of the Pedigree buffet in the main ballroom where he definitely ate his share of bacon and cheese treats.

Mingus gives two paws up to the Unleashed goody bags

A look inside the Unleashed goody bags

Mingus may still be sleeping off his Unleashed party hangover, but he already can’t wait until next year. From the Wag the vote posters that lined the halls of the ballroom, to the voting boxes that were the table centerpieces, this year’s Unleashed was one of the best.

Fashion Friday: Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets have made their way into many collections over the past few seasons so it was time to give them a little Fashion Friday love. A bomber jacket gives a nod to sportswear, but now that they come in a variety of fabrics, this is not a jacket relegated to only your denim or athleisure favorites. With sequin, quilted and embroidered versions, this is a jacket you can wear like you would most cropped or waist-length jackets. Give it a try this season. Hover over the image and click the "+" to link through and shop.

12 Questions: Barry Wishnow of BASH by Barry Wishnow

Originally published for 12th & Broad... I’ve admired Barry Wishnow’s bespoke line of menswear, Bash by Barry Wishnow for several years now. Until last week, I had never met Barry in person, but I’ve definitely spied him around Nashville. You can’t miss him. He’s the dapper gentleman who is always impeccably dressed, whether he’s at dinner, a fashion event, the Belcourt or even the Whole Foods hot bar. I’m obsessed with his style. It hails back to a time when people didn’t leave their house in yoga pants. They were dressed up, their clothes fit properly, they looked polished and very, very stylish.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview Barry and learn more about his style and his custom clothing line, which now includes womenswear. Truly nothing looks more chic than menswear as womenswear, especially when it’s perfectly tailored.

With Barry’s fashion pedigree, including time at Yves Saint Laurent and Burberry, and as President of Calvin Klein and CEO of Hugo Boss America, it’s no surprise that his attention to detail on the business side is just as flawless as his tailoring. Knowing and understanding the fundamentals of business is equally important to him, and if you look at how carefully curated his own line is, it makes perfect sense that he is currently consulting with one of my favorite Nashville designers, Elizabeth Suzann.

Barry’s new Bash by Barry Wishnow studio is open now in the 12 South neighborhood across from Imogene + Willie. Walking into the studio, you are instantly transported to a time when style included tailored suits, waistcoats, the perfect hat and snazzy shoes. It speaks Humphrey Bogart, Carey Grant, Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman. It’s completely fantastic.

Here, Barry answers questions about Bash, his move to Nashville and the state of the fashion industry.

What prompted your move to Nashville? What do you love most about living here?

The truth is I stopped drinking, and felt I needed a change from New York. Retrospectively, I'm not sure if that was correct, but it has worked out beautifully. I had friends here and I thought I would see what it was like. Seven years later, here I am. People are extraordinarily friendly, and supportive.

You have worked for some major brands including Hugo Boss, Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry and Calvin Klein. How has all of that experience influenced the way you approach your business today?

I have had the chance to work with businesses from different parts of the world, and with different personalities. With each experience, I was exposed to different needs, and I was able to adapt my philosophies, and methods to their needs. There are certain fundamentals to success. Certainly in the fashion industry. If you stray to far from those, you will not succeed.

BASH By Barry Wishnow_Photo by Stella Shops

You were a Creative Consultant at O’More College of Design. Are you still involved with the college? What is/was your favorite part of working with the students?

Frankly, I was very disappointed with my experience at O'More. I do not believe they give a quality fashion education. Since that time, they have made quite a few personnel changes, however, I am completely disconnected. I will say that one of the students, Shima Mojouni Kluding has worked with me for four years, and is very important to me and the success of Bash. She will tell you that her real education came by working with me.

What is the best advice you would give a new designer or a student who is just getting started in the fashion industry?

My best advice is to learn how to sell. All the great ones were great sellers in different ways. Without that drive, they can't succeed. My other advice is to find a way to sell directly to your customer. Wholesaling is over! I consult for Elizabeth Suzann here in Nashville. We have accomplished so much in a little over a year. It's extraordinary, and the business is not local. All online and no wholesale distribution. We have great plans going forward.

BASH By Barry Wishnow_Photo by Stella Shops

Your bespoke brand (Bash by Barry Wishnow) is 1940’s inspired. What resonates most with you about that time period that it has influenced your personal style as well as your brand?

Not only 1940's, but glamour Hollywood. The photos of that era speak for itself. It was about an exciting time when great clothing was a prerequisite for celebrity. But even average people dressed. Just look at old footage of men at ball games, wearing suits, and hats. Golf attire, and even tennis, had so much style. The great pants that Hepburn wore, and suits that Dietrich had made at Anderson and Sheppard. I could go on forever.

What made you finally decide to open your studio?

I decided to open, because I have a vision of how my clothing and accessories should be displayed, and I felt it was time. I did quite a lot of business, and feel it would be expanded considerably with the studio. Plus I am now also doing women's.

BASH by Barry Wishnow_Photo by Stella Shops

What can customers expect to find when they come to Bash?

I hope when people come in they will see fashion presented in a way that is not only unique, but unlike anything they've seen in this town before. Plus an environment that is fun.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the fashion industry? Are there any changes you’d like to see?

The fashion industry as it once was, is over. The retail availability is limited, and the existing stores cannot introduce new brands successfully. As a result, it's just the same old, same old. The only way to develop a new brand is going directly to the consumer. There is no future in wholesale distribution.

BASH By Barry Wishnow_Photo by Stella Shops

There has been a lot of conversation about whether Nashville has the resources it needs to create a sustainable fashion industry. Do you feel Nashville has those resources? If not, what are the next steps that need to happen to get there?

I'm not sure what the meaning of sustainable resources is. If it refers to production, I don't find that a necessary reason for success. Production is available all over the world, and in the States as well. The first requirement, is to build a business, and either produce yourself, or find facilities that can do it. It is a big responsibility to fill a factory, not to mention diversified products. From the meetings I have attended, I think there is a considerable naiveté.

Fern Mallis recently attended Nashville Fashion Week for the second year. How did you and Fern first meet? What do you think of her new book, “Fashion Lives”?

Like many industries, fashion is a community that you meet people. I initially met Fern through a mutual friend. She's a wonderful person. Her book is terrific, and the response has been fabulous.

BASH by Barry Wishnow_Photo by Stella Shops

What are five of your favorite places in Nashville?

Wow, that's not easy. Plus it isn't very interesting. Starbucks in Green Hills. (Not the mall) - When I first moved here, I would go there to read the New York Times. As a result I have made so many friends, and a bunch of us meet every morning. It's become very important to me. Frothy Monkey, City House, Eastland Cafe, Cabana.

I hear you’re a bit of a foodie. If you were hosting a dinner party, what four Nashvillians would you invite and what would you serve?

Well, I'd probably invite my friends, but if it were a bit of a fantasy, Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, Nicole Kidman, Sheryl Crow. I'd make braised short ribs. Love them.

To see more of Barry’s fabulous line, follow Bash by Barry Wishow on Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr. The studio is located at 1120 Montrose Ave, Ste. 202. To make an appointment, contact Barry at 201-310-1595.

How To Wear It: Kate Spade Valentine's Day

On Friday, I featured some of my favorite Kate Spade specialty bags. I absolutely adore the cut out back on this Topshop dress and I've had my eye on these Nasty Gal lace up heels for months. Those shoes would look just as good with a pair of jeans as they do with this dress. Bonus that they are now 50% off and only $80! They might even be in my shopping cart as I type. How To Wear It: Wide Leg Jeans

On Friday, I featured some of my favorite wide leg jeans. It started a discussion at the office on how to actually style them. The rules are pretty simple. Wider bottoms mean skinnier tops. Even if you're pairing your wide leg denim with a longer tunic, make sure the tunic is fitted around your waist. I love to pair mine with fitted button down blouses like the striped one from Banana Republic featured in the collage below. Try a fitted t-shirt with a blazer too. Hover over the collage and click the "+" to shop any of the items in this collage.[show_ms_widget id="31602900" image_id="35350735" width="575" height="466"]

Fashion Friday: Wide Leg Jeans

The 70's may be a faint memory for most of us, but we still have a love affair with wide leg jeans. Thankfully today's flared denim doesn't have the volume of its hippy counterpoint. Today's version is slim like a skinny jean, but flares out just enough from the knee to make it slightly wider than a boot cut. It's a sophisticated flare and I'm loving it. When you find the right proportion for your shape, the perfect wide leg will even make your legs look longer. I have a pair of Mother skinny flare jeans that I found at UAL in Nashville for a bargain $59. These jeans are incredibly soft and comfortable. They have the perfect fit and flare. I'll never part with my skinny jeans, but a wide leg is the perfect alternative. Shop some of my favorite wide leg jeans. Come back Monday to see how I style this season's denim staple.
