My 12th & Broad Broad Style post recently was all about those wardrobe essentials all of us should have in our closets. From that crisp white button down to the perfect pair of black pumps, these basics are far from boring. These are the pieces that pair just as perfectly with each other as they do with your leather pants, sequin tops and not so sensible platforms. [show_lookbook_widget id="187264"]
There are a few special pieces however that deserve an honorable mention. These may not fit into everyone's style, but if they fit into yours, by all means add them to your list.
The Leather Jacket
Leather jackets come in many styles, but the motorcycle jacket is the way to go. It's a classic style you'll wear much more than you ever imagined. It's rock 'n' roll chic with a t-shirt and a pair of skinny black jeans or trousers, and it's the perfect way to toughen up a pretty dress. It's also a great layering piece. I've been wearing mine under my long winter coat so I still have a jacket on that will keep me warm in my chilly office. If leather isn't your thing, don't be afraid to go the faux leather route. Faux leather looks so good these days, it's sometimes tough to tell if it's real or not.
The Denim Jacket
There is nothing better than a worn-in denim jacket. Over time, this all-American staple wears in as well as your favorite pair of jeans. I love the boxy shape, and like a leather jacket, I love to pair it with a pretty dress. It's another perfect layering piece. My J-Crew denim jacket is one of the older items in my closet and I wear it more now than ever. I also added a fitted style in a darker wash which layers perfectly over sleeveless sundresses and maxis on cool summer nights.
The Breton Stripe Top
Granted I am stripe and chevron obsessed, but a nice Breton stripe top is classic French chic. It looks good with everything. Cropped skinny jeans, khaki pants, leather pants, maxi skirts, pencil skirts, denim jackets, leather jackets, trench coats...literally everything! Now that I think about it, the Breton stripe deserves more than an honorable mention.
The Ballet Flat
Not everyone is a fan of the ballet flat, myself included, but if I'm going to tell you the Breton Stripe top is an "essential" then I can't leave out the ballet flat. Ballet flats in any color or style really do add a classic element that is once again quintessentially French. With midi skirts, cropped jeans or capri pants they add just the right amount of polish.
It's hard to beat a good ankle bootie. This is my shoe staple. I have them in a variety of colors and heel heights. There are so many shapes and sizes that they can be casual or dressy. Ankle height booties pair well with any style of jean and most skirts and maxi dresses. They're also my go-to shoe during festival season. The last thing I want is an open toe in a muddy field.
