Fashion Friday: The Puffer Coat

Happy Friday from the snowy tundra of Nashville! The snow is still falling and hopefully you're enjoying a snow day. I had something different in mind for today's Fashion Friday, but it seemed more appropriate to focus on a staple of the winter season, and something we can all use today, the puffer coat.

I remember these coats from when I was a kid in northeast Ohio in the '70s and '80s. Puffer coats were winter staples, but let's face it, we all looked like the Michelin Man. I remember how hard it was to put your arms down in these jackets because by the time you put your four layers on and then your coat, there was so much bulk you couldn't move.

Today's puffer jackets are high tech and super slim. Many use a down alternative, which I love because I was always allergic to down and it's nicer to the animals. They're also just as warm, if not warmer, as the original version and you don't need to wear as many layers. With today's "athleisure" trend still on the rise, they've also become pretty fashionable. Carbon38 carries a peplum puffer!

Here are some of my favorite puffer jackets to keep you warm, cozy and stylish this winter. Check back Monday for the puffer How To Wear It featuring more cold weather essentials.

Stay warm out there!

Get Fit in New Athleticwear

Happy New Year! I hope you had an incredible holiday and woke up this morning fully recharged and ready to start not only the first work week of 2016, but also your new fitness regimen. After nearly two glorious weeks off that included me drinking copious amounts of wine and shoving my mom's cookies in my mouth at a rate that probably broke some cookie eating record, it was time to get back to my pre-holiday work out schedule. Since I did a few workouts over the holiday, I didn't think going to my usual Monday evening Barre3 class would be that hard. Wrong. I nearly walked out of class tonight because it was too crowded, I was late and I had what felt like 27 layers of clothes on since it's finally winter in Nashville. But I forged on. I got through class and now feel 100% better about the two cookies I ate right before I sat down to write this post. I can't just quit the sugar cold turkey right? The one thing getting me through my winter workout slump is the new athleticwear I got for Christmas. When did workout gear get so cool? There are so many designers in the fitness game. Stella McCartney for AdidasDerek Lam for Athleta. Mara Hoffman. Rebecca Minkoff. And then there is Kate Hudson's Fabletics which is like a Birchbox for workout gear. The pieces are great and super affordable which is a relief after looking at $100 yoga pants. I am obsessed with Carbon38, and Lululemon and Athleta have always been favorites, but I shop their sales pretty consistently to find the best deals. Athleta and Lululemon are both having awesome sales right now. And let's not forget about Target! They have a great athleticwear department too.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces. Hover over the image and click the "+" sign to link through to product pages for more information.
