How to Wear It: Bold Florals

These aren't your typical girly-girl Laura Ashley florals. These florals are as big and bold with their color as they are with their design. They're edgy and fun and make anything in your closet instantly more modern. The floral print on this Anthropologie skirt is large enough that it's almost more of an abstract print than a floral. I chose to pair this high waisted maxi with a crop top, but a tucked in tank top or sleeveless blouse would look just as great. I kept everything neutral here to let the maxi skirt be the focal point. Have some fun with accessories and make sure to add a bold bright lip and nail lacquer to finish off your look. How To Wear It: Madewell Transport Tote

Nothing beats a good tote bag. They do double duty as the perfect weekend or travel bag. I love running errands with a tote, because it keeps my hands free. I love traveling with a tote, because I can fit a smaller bag inside, as well as my iPad and a bottle of water. The negative is they can be a bottomless pit, but I'm willing to run that risk because they look so chic. I saw this Madewell Transport Tote when I was visiting my parents in Cleveland, Ohio over the holidays. The rich color caught my eye, and at $168, this leather tote doesn't break the bank. It may seem like I went a little Nashville hipster here, but it's 13 degrees and I couldn't resist a 60% wool plaid shirt with pockets. I was wearing plaid long before there were hipsters, so I get a hall pass.

The boots pictured above are the Peter Nappi Carina in Wintersmoke. Since I have a bootie obsession, you'll see some other favorites in the group below, but there is nothing like a pair of Peter Nappi's. They're pretty much boot perfection. Thanks to the hubby, I'm currently breaking in a Cuoio pair.

Shop: Sparkle & Sequins

I might love my plaid, but this time of year, I just can't get enough sequins! Nothing screams 'holiday' more to me than the sparkle of a sequin (or the lush look of velvet...but that's for another post). Honestly, I wear sequins practically all year, just in varying degrees of glitz and glam. Come holiday time, the bolder the better, so break out those sparkly pants and jackets ladies. They're all fair game. 20121219-185805.jpg

Oh hello Marc by Marc Jacobs. This crazy mix of prints and sequins is a Blossum/Punky Brewster mash-up.

Shop: For the Love of Plaid

After 12 years of enduring polyester plaid uniform skirts during my formative years you would think the last thing I would want in my wardrobe is more plaid. Alas, I can't seem to get enough of it. If you've read this blog for any amount of time, it's no secret how much I love Burberry. It all started with that plaid. This weekend I saw a black watch plaid cape at Old Made Good and I can't stop thinking about it. It's the exact plaid I wore all through high school but I don't care. I think I need that cape. From shirts, to pants, to more jackets I've seen so much plaid it's becoming a full on obsession. And I have a soft spot for all that plaid mixed with other prints. I vividly remember wearing paisley (it was the 80's after all), stripes or polka dots with all that tartan goodness. I basically treated that uniform skirt like a neutral back then, and that's what you should do now.

Here are some of my favorites...
